Fiber Intermediates

Versatile component, versatile products

The Fiber Intermediates consists of the Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), Ethylene Glycols (EG) & Ethylene Oxide (EO). Our suppliers are amongst the largest global producers of these products – 4th largest in PTA & 6th largest in EG having world scale plants and best-in-class technology.

An informal term referring to a range of intermediate products derived from benzene or xylenes, such as p-xylene, cyclohexane, and TPA, which may be further processed to create polymers for synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon. 1World Energy Specifications for Fiber Intermediates are given below.

  • Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) is an alternate feed stock to Di Methyl Terephthalate for production of polyester.
  • Product Information:
    1. Our suppliers are among the top 5 PTA producers in the world with a mammoth capacity of 5 MMTPA. Technologies are from Invista and Dupont. PTA was first introduced in 1965 as an alternative feedstock to Dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT) for the production of Polyester. By end of 1999, almost 85% of total world production was based on PTA and this continues to grow.

Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) reacts with Mono Ehtylene Glycol (MEG) to produce polyester.
    • Textiles: Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) derivative, Polyester, is the largest synthetic fibre used in textiles.
    • Packaging: Polyethylene Terephthalic (PET) films, sheet and molded containers for food packaging continue to grow in popularity. Light weight soft drink containers based on Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) are crystal clear and shatter proof. In addition, blister packaging for fresh and prepared food products is often based on Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA).
    • Furnishing: Staple fiber made for polyester is also used in furniture application like cushions, upholstery etc.
    • Consumer Goods: Apart from textiles, furnishing as detailed above, PET is used in films for audio and video recording tapes.
    • Coatings: – Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) is used in the polyester component of environmentally compliant coating resins, including water soluble and powder systems.
    • Resins: – Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) also finds applications in Unsaturated Polyester which are used as engineering plastics.
    • Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) has also applications in Speciality Chemical Industries

  • Product Information:
    1. Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) is a colorless, virtually odorless and slightly viscous liquid. It is miscible with water, alcohols, aldehydes and many organic compounds. MEG will not dissolve rubber, cellulose acetate or heavy vegetable and petroleum oils. MEG has a low volatility and it is 50% more hygroscopic than glycerol at room temperature.

Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) is the most widely used chemical from the Glycol family. It is an essential raw material for Polyester fibres and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) polymer. MEG based products are also used as coolants in Automobile antifreeze, resins, humectants for paper etc.

MEG can be transported in Epoxy coated MS tankers. It can be stored in MS containers lined with baked phenolic resin / air drying epoxy phenolic resin or vinyl resin. It is advisable to store MEG in a cool, dry place with good ventilation – away from heat, sparks or flames.

    2. Mono, Di & Tri Ethylene Glycol (MEG, DEG, TEG) with capacity of 1500 KTA of MEG.

  • DEG Product Details
  • Diethylene Glycol is a by-product in the manufacture of Monoethylene glycol produced by EO hydrolysis. Diethylene glycol is a colourless liquid with a high boiling point. DEG is practically odourless and sweetish to taste. It is considerably hygroscopic in nature. DEG is miscible with water, alcohol, ether, acetone but is insoluble in benzene and carbon tetrachloride.

Di-Ethylene Glycol is used in Unsaturated Polyester Resins, Coolants, Pesticides, Rubber Compounding, Plasticizer, Polyurethane Foams, Textile Auxiliaries, Polyethylene Glycols, Paints etc.

DEG can be transported in Epoxy coated MS tankers. It can be stored in MS containers lined with baked phenolic resin / air drying epoxy phenolic resin or vinyl resin. It is advisable to store DEG in a cool, dry place with good ventilation – away from heat, sparks or flames.

  • Applications:
    1.  MEG is primarily used in producing Polyester Yarns, Polyester Staple Fiber, PET resin & PET film. It is also used in anti-freeze and coolants, as well as in resins used as adhesives, surface coatings and enamels.
    2. DEG is used in making unsaturated polyester resins, polyester polyols, polyurethanes, cement grinding aids & plasticizers.
    3. TEG finds application mainly in the oil & gas industry as a dehumidifying agent. It is also used in manufacture of plasticizers and as an industrial solvent.
    4. 1. Polyester

Mono Ethylene Glycol is an essential raw material for Polyester. Ethylene Glycol reacts with PTA to produce polyester.

      2. Adhesives, Sealants and Coatings

Mono Ethylene Glycol and D-Ethylene Glycol is used in latex based paint formulation. These glycols are also used to produce acrylate and methacrylate resins for coatings, adhesives, and paints.

      3. Alkyd Resins for Paints and Coatings

Mono Ethylene Glycol is used as a reactant in the manufacture of Alkyd resins which are used in Paints, enamels and varnishes.

      4. Antifreeze

Ethylene Glycol (MEG) is used as an active ingredient in engine coolants and antifreeze, offering benefits including a high boiling point, low vapor pressure, excellent heat transfer abilities, and the ability to depress the freezing point of water.

      5. Others

      A) Dyes & Inks

MEG finds applications in products like Dyes & Inks for High speed printing.

      B) Humectants

Glycols being hygroscopic in nature are also used as Humectants for paper etc

    5. DEG Applications
    6. Application :

      1. Unsaturated Polyester Resins

Polyester resins derived from DEG are flexible in nature. They are used as low pressure laminates for glass fibres, asbestos, cloth and paper.

        2. Coolants

DEG can be used in cooling systems as it increases the boiling temperature considerably there by enabling the coolant perform more effectively in carrying off the excess heat generated by auto engines.

        3. Pesticides

DEG is primarily used to encapsulate granules of phorate pesticide.

        4. Rubber Compounding

For coloured rubber products such as hawai chappals, DEG is used as an additive along with silica filler compounds to prevent the absorption of other ingredients such as the accelerator used in the rubber compounds.

        5. Plastisizer

Benzoic acid is esterified with DEG to produce DEG Dibenzoate . It finds an application as plasticizer in PVC Compounds , PVA adhesives and moulded urethanes.

        6. Polyurethane foams

DEG is condensed with adipic acid or other poly functional acids to give polyurethane intermediate which upon polymerisation with di-iso-cyanate and subsequent reaction with water form polyurethane foams.

        7. Textile Auxiliaries

DEG is used as a hygroscopic agent in textile printing. The fact that it is completely miscible in water as well as many organic chemicals, makes it suitable as a solvent in many auxiliary formulations.
